The department of neuroanesthesia and intensive care has been functional since December 2000.It presently has 4 full time consultants who share the responsibility of running the preanesthetic clinic ,acute and chronic pain services in addition to providing anesthesia services for various operations and interventional neuroradiology.The neurointensive care unit is also run by the department of anesthesia .
The neurointensive care unit is also run by the department .The neurointensive care unit is a composite unit looking after both neuromedicine and neurosurgery patients. It consists of a 8 bedded intensive care unit and a 6 bedded High dependency unit.
The unit looks after a wide variety of patients ranging from victims of neurotrauma ,stroke patients and postoperative neurosurgical patients among others. In addition the department also takes the responsibility of teaching the nurses and junior doctors and plans to start a certificate course in neurocritical care in the future.The department is headed by Dr.Sucharita Chakravarti who has brought back the recent concepts in neuroanesthesia to the department following a year long fellowship program in Neuroanesthesia in Toronto, Canada.The ITU is under the capable management of Dr.Kallol Deb who ensures that the very best patient care is delivered by the junior doctors under his strict supervision. Dr.Aisha S.Khan brings with her experience of working in various other centres in India such as Bhubaneshwar,Gwalior and Nagpur.Dr.Jayati Ghosh the other dynamic member of our team is on a study leave for a year for higher studies at the Bangur institute of Neurology.The newest member of our team is Dr.Neeta Karmakar who is the right hand of Dr.Deb in the ITU.
